In the 1960s, the British Broadcasting Corporation – or BBC, had the monopoly on broadcasting. Therefore, nobody else could transmit news or music on the radio because the BBC had entire control of what the British people were listening to.
In 1964, Ronan O'Rihally, an Irish visionary, found a loophole – a solution – that obeyed the law but, also gave the people what they wanted to hear. And so... Radio Caroline was born! The first pirate radio station in the United Kingdom. On his mission for freedom, four important fellow travelers followed Ronan:
Betty, his girlfriend: a well-born English girl and convinced feminist, self-confident and full of energy.
Ellen, Ronan’s best friend: Irish and apparently introverted, she will demonstrate to be naturally revolutionary and have a strong personality.
Tommy, a young and brillant dancer with a show-man natural talent, extremely charismatic and brave.
Victoria, an American avant-garde journalist, with always plenty of ideas. She reaches the group on board to interview them.
The five young people, united by their passion for music and their desire to break the pattern, give birth to a revolutionary way of conceiving the radio, which spread throughout Europe in the following years. On air 24/7, their stories alternate with the incursions of the Great History and the audience’ s comments. For the first time the radio followers could freely choose the music that better identified them and intervene with their opinions, giving birth to debates and exchanging their ideas.
